Stop paying twice for AI: build apps with the subscription you already have
Already pay for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini? Build apps with your AI subscription instead of buying app-builder credits on top. Here is how, and what it costs.
If you already pay for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, you can build apps with your AI subscription instead of buying a second allowance from an app builder. Hosted builders such as Lovable, Bolt.new, Replit, Base44 and v0 sell their own credits, tokens or messages, and most of that pays for AI work your existing plan could do. This guide explains where the overlap is, how to use the plan you have, and when a hosted builder is still worth it.
How you end up paying twice
A common setup in 2026 looks like this:
- A ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription for everyday work, often paid by the company.
- An app builder on top, because the chat window cannot turn an idea into a running app.
The app builder runs its own AI models and meters them in its own unit. When the allowance runs out you upgrade, wait, or buy more. Meanwhile, the subscription you already pay for includes a coding agent that can do the same building: OpenAI Codex is included in ChatGPT plans, and Claude Code is included in Claude Pro and Max plans.
Here is how the main builders meter usage, from their own pricing pages as of November 2026:
| Builder | Usage unit | Entry paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| Lovable | Credits | Pro from $25 a month for 100 credits |
| Bolt.new | Tokens | Pro from $25 a month for 10 million tokens |
| Replit | Effort-based credits | Core at $20 a month, including $20 of usage |
| Base44 | Message and integration credits | Starter at $16 a month billed annually, 100 message credits |
| v0 | Credits | Plus at $30 per user a month, including $30 of credits |
What builder credits actually buy
To be fair to the builders, it is not pure double-charging. A hosted builder’s plan also pays for things your AI subscription does not include:
- Hosting for the finished app, often with a custom domain on paid plans.
- A built-in database, file storage and user sign-in.
- A browser workspace with nothing to install, usable from any computer.
- Team features such as shared workspaces and, on some tools, real-time collaboration.
If you need all of that, a builder can be good value. The overlap is the AI itself, the part that writes and fixes code. That is usually what runs out first, and it is exactly what your subscription already covers.
Build apps with your AI subscription
The AI labs ship coding agents that work on real projects on your computer: Claude Code from Anthropic and OpenAI Codex. Open source agents such as opencode can use many other models. They are excellent, and they are built for developers, which means a terminal, a framework, a dev server and git.
Jig is a free desktop app that drives those agents for you. It looks like a hosted builder, with a chat on the left and a live preview on the right, but:
- It uses the assistant you already have, signed in with your plan or key. Your AI provider bills usage, the way it already does. Jig never charges for AI.
- Each project is a plain folder and git repository on your computer from the first minute.
- It adds the parts non-developers need: a short interview, written plans to approve, a live preview, an error banner with a fix button, and a checkpoint for every change.
Plan by plan: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and more
ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise
OpenAI says Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise, with limits that grow with the plan. Codex signs in with your ChatGPT account, or with an OpenAI API key. Jig drives it. Full walkthrough: building apps with ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise.
Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise
Claude Code signs in with a Claude plan or an Anthropic API key. It has the deepest integration in Jig today: plan mode, session resume and cost reporting. See how to build with Claude Code without a terminal.
Google Gemini
Jig reaches Gemini through opencode with a Gemini API key from Google AI Studio. Be aware that this is an API key billed by Google, not the Gemini app subscription: a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan does not sign in here.
OpenRouter, Groq and local models
opencode also works with an OpenRouter or Groq key, or with models running on your own computer through Ollama, which costs nothing per message once the model is downloaded.
Your company’s AI account
Companies can route Claude through their own Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry account, billed under their existing cloud agreement, or use an Anthropic or OpenAI enterprise API key. The page for IT explains how.
What you give up
Using your own subscription through a local app is not free of trade-offs. Be clear-eyed about them:
- Setup. You need a desktop computer (macOS, Windows or Linux) and the AI assistant installed and signed in, or an API key. Jig shows the commands to copy, but it is not zero-install.
- Hosting. Jig does not host your app. You publish to your own Netlify account, a static host via a zip, or your servers with a Dockerfile.
- Backend. There is no built-in database. Your app uses services you choose, such as your own Supabase project.
- Mobile and multiplayer. No phone app and no real-time co-editing. Teams share work through git.
- Plan limits. Your AI plan’s own limits still apply. A long build can hit them.
Which approach fits you
A hosted builder fits if you have no AI subscription yet, want everything from one company, need instant hosting and a database without thinking about it, or want to build from a tablet or a borrowed computer.
Your own subscription with Jig fits if you already pay for ChatGPT, Claude or API access, want your projects as folders and git repositories you own, or work at a company that needs code in its own git and AI it already approved.

Questions people ask
Can I use my ChatGPT subscription to build apps?
Yes. OpenAI Codex is included in ChatGPT plans and signs in with your ChatGPT account. Jig drives Codex and adds a live preview, plans and checkpoints.
Can I use my Claude Pro subscription to build apps?
Yes. Claude Code is included in Claude Pro and Max plans, and in Team and Enterprise seats that include it. Jig drives the Claude Code you have signed in.
Can I use my Gemini subscription?
Not directly. Jig uses Gemini through opencode with a Gemini API key from Google AI Studio, which Google bills separately from the Gemini app plans.
Is Jig really free?
The builder is free. Optional paid plans add backups to your own cloud storage and organization features. Jig never charges for AI usage.
Are app builder credits a bad deal?
Not always. They also pay for hosting, databases and a zero-install workspace. They overlap with what you already pay for when the main thing you need is the AI that writes the code.
